Conan Stevens And Nathan Jones To Battle It Out In The New Thai Movie Som Tam - Pattaya Papaya

Wednesday, 04 April 2007

That's right, I have signed with Baa Ram Ewe to act in their upcoming made for International release movie called Som Tam (pronounced Som Tum alternatively titled Pattaya Papaya). In the final scene I will be battling it out against the only other muscle giant actor that I have so far met - Nathan Jones.

Billed As Tom Yum Gung 2 Som Tam Is Hoped To Be As Big A Success As Nathan Jones 1st Thai Movie

Like the smash hit movie Tom Yum Gung (or Tom Yam Goong or a variety of other spellings) the name is derived from a well known Thai food dish. In this case Som Tam is an EXTREMELY hot salad made with crushed up green papaya, chillies, prawns (shrimps), tomato, dried chilli powder, fish sauce, etc.

It is always fun to watch a tourist being fed his first bite of Som Tam (Som Tum)....

... first time I had Som Tam I was busily shovelling food down, I took my fork stabbed it into the long Papaya strands and twirled it up like spagetti, then I shoved a huge mouthful in as my Thai friends watched in amazement....

....Holy lava flows Batman, I grabbed my beer as casually as an emergency allows and washed the lot down without another chew. That was the hottest thing I had ever eaten. I kept a calm composure while continually sipping my beers for the next 10 minutes while putting ice into my mouth between daughts.

But back to the Som Tam movie...

Again we had an opening ceremony and received blessings from a Buddhist Monk, in fact the same Monk that did the Bangkok Adrenaline ceremony

The next day I was called in for a casting of a different sort....

Som Tam - Plaster Casting My Body To Make Stunt Body Armour

Baa Ram Ewe are a serious production house, I am even getting custom made body armour for stunt scenes - usually it is up to us not to hurt ourselves, and tough luck if you do.

Funny seeing how big my torso  is compared to other guys...

Massive Chest And Back, Makes The Guys Look Small

So now I have a copy of the script and know my character, would you like to hear a little about that?  Yes?

I am to play Jojo an impeccably dressed mafia type along with his Boss who travel to Thailand on a short stop over only to lose..... and then they get caught up in local happenings and in the end I fight Nathan Jones who plays a tourist caught in unhappy circumstances who finds himself stuck in Pattaya.

What?

I can't give too much away.... you'll have to see the Som Tam movie...

And by the way if you are interested in a real Som Tam recipe, here is one:

  • 8-12 Thai chillies (red and hot as you can get), each cut into 3-4 segments
  • 8 cloves garlic, crushed and cut into pieces
  • 2 Tbs. small dried shrimp
  • 4 cups julienned peeled unripe papaya - in strips 2-3 inches long and 1/8 inch thick
  • 1 cup cut long beans
  • 1 julienned carrot (optional)
  • 1/4 cup tamarind juice the thickness of fruit concentrate
  • Juice of 2-3 limes, to taste
  • 2-3 Tbs. fish sauce, to taste
  • 2-3 Tbs. palm sugar, melted with 1 Tbs. water into a thick syrup - use as needed
  • 2 small tomatoes, cut into bite-size wedges; or 12 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/4 cup chopped unsalted roasted peanuts

Crush these ingredients alltogether with a mortar and pestle then serve with glutinous (sticky) rice, often also eaten with chopped BBQ chicken leg, and beer actually increases the heat so iced water or milk is best to take the heat out of your mouth.

Som Tam is definitely an acquired taste, hopefully the Som Tam movie is an instant hit.
