Yes it's that time of year - Thai New Year - and what a good / bad time it is depending upon your mood.

This year it has been officially sanction as a 3 day holiday by the Government, great if you are a Thai or into reliving that lost childhood bad news if you have a business to run and want to get down to work.

You see all of Thailand (except Pattaya that is a special circumstance) goes into a 3 day water fight frenzy...

Had a few emails recently as my last post was about me being sick - just a quick update for now:

  2. Auditioned for and passed for a Warner Brothers movie
  3. Shot 1 week already on same Warner Bros movie

  5. Shot the same TVC and got my first partial body burn

I think that is about it for the last  3 weeks, though I am sure i have done more it eludes e at present.

Friday, 15 February 2008

Following on the success of Air Asia's cheap 99 Baht ($3) Airfare deals - I am flying to Phnom Penh tomorrow for 4 days.

I plan oh heading down to the coastal town of Sihanoukville and seeing the place before all the International resorts and hotel chains build there (many have already bought land).

Also I will be meeting with representatives of Film Cambodia to check out hte current capabilities of the incountry crews and equipment availability and to form friendships for future working relationships.

Plus I will be taking time to examine the city in more detail as an ex-pat, accomodation, gym, supermarkets, food availability, etc.

And I will be catching up with a few friends I have made over my last few visits.

Happy Chinese New Year

"Happy Be Mi"

Happy New Year, I don't know why the Thais use the English word happy but that is generally what we foreigners hear.

Either that or the string of 500 exploding firecrackers let off in the car park of our apartment complex at 7am followed by yokels laughing and children screaming....

Nokia N95 8GB Vs Pentium PC

The Nokia N95 "It's what computers have become"

Last week before my trip to Myanmar I upgraded from my Nokia N70 (it was starting to have a few problems) to a new Nokia N95 8GB. I spent 9 hours online reading the manuals, and technology forums, transferring all my old files and setting the Nokia N95 8GB up to exactly how I wanted it.

To give a brief review would be to say that the Nokia N95 advertising  slogan is 100% correct, this item is not a phone, though it does that too, it is better than a complete Pentium 2 PC in your pocket....

Yangon, Myanmar

Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

At 5am tomorrow morning I get up to go to Yangon in Myanmar (used to be called Rangoon, Burma) for a 3 day 'holiday' trip to visit a very good friend and to partake in the Australia Day celebrations held by the Australian Embassy to which I have scored an invite.

Seeing how there is very limited mobile phone coverage, patchy internet coverage and NO ATM machines in Myanmar I probably won't be posting any articles while I am away, but I am back on Sunday so I'll have a travel video shortly thereafter and a travel article with many photos.

Slow Internet Many Sites Time Out

Wednesday, 09 January 2008

For the last 4 hours or so my website has been unreachable. The server that I lease is hosted in Atlanta and there were some problems there:

The word we're getting from Atlanta is that a major carrier is working on a bad fiber connection. This is not the data center's fault and is totally unrelated to the emergency router maintenance from a month ago. I'm seeing 1%-3% packet loss from NJ. We'll continue to monitor and provide updates as we receive them. Apologies for any inconvenience.

This means that 1 to 3% of information was not making the trip, in fact it was much worse than that with major sections of the Internet completely unreachable....

What To Pack When Travelling Internationally

Print E-mail
Monday, 07 January 2008

20 Kgs of luggage allowance and months away from home - what do you pack?

Often I have seen friends packing way too much stuff in their bags when they are only travelling for 2 weeks . They bring a full backpack, a travel pack and some carry on luggage AND their laptop.... everything but the kitchen sink - just in case they need it.

That is too much to pack when travelling, especially when travelling to Thailand. Carrying around a whole pile of crap that you do not need or use is a sure way to annoy the heck out of you when travelling, especially if you plan on getting around and seeing the country you travel to.

Here's how I pack when I travel, and what I pack...

Bangkok Police Shake Down Foreigners For Cash

Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 January 2008

Last week I was on my way to TOT, the major telephone company in Thailand to drop off some papers to get ADSL connected at my apartment, I called a friend who lives next door to the TOT office and asked if she would like to go to lunch. Turns out she was at the bank paying her mortgage, just up the road from my place, so I asked the taxi driver to stop and wait for a minute as she crossed the road.

Next thing I know Bangkok Police are hassling us for "prostitution" and trying to take an "on the spot fine"...

Sunday, 16 December 2007

I just spent 5 weeks in Sydney, Australia with Sydney Dance Company, followed by 2 weeks in Bangkok while finalising details before I went for 2 weeks to Mumbai, India then to Brisbane, Australia for 2 weeks to finish my contract with SDC.

So all in all I have been away for 11 weeks, add into that the month living out of a suitacase at a girlfriends place before I left (I vacated my apartment) and it is just about 4 months living out of a suitcase.

So what have been the effects and what am I going to do next?

The last 3 videos I also made typing errors when I made the posts before I went away, this means that the videos were not working and I was not checking them... doh!

Tall Poppy Syndrome

Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 November 2007

Tall Poppy Syndrome is a distinctly Australian negative trait. It refers to those who get their kicks and sense of self importance by bringing down others who are successful. It can also refer to these same type of people who revel in the misfortunes of these same successful people.

Tall Poppy Syndrome is such a wide spead trait that even our current Prime Minister felt moved to make this statement:

"if there’s one thing we need to get rid of in this country it is our tall poppy syndrome."
