What Is Wrong With Todays Role Models

Wednesday, 29 September 2010

Besides the fact today's Youth are rebelling against their parents established values, same as youth of every generation, todays "Heroes" and "Role Models" are products of entrenched profit driven industries that portray the real world as a fantasy, high living, easy money without effort.

These unrealistic expectations and non-sustainable role models are the real problems with todays youth.

Let me explain...

First up the inspiration for this article goes to a reader of this site Thomas Fortenberry, who wrote to me quiet a while ago regarding the potential making of a Doc Savage movie.

Doc Savage? The Man Of Bronze? Yes, an inspiration to a generation of pulp fiction readers. Also the inspiration for a slew of Super Characters and even movie characters.

The Heroes of older generations were people of substance and achievement. Scientists like Rocket Scientist Wernher Von Braun, US Army General George S. Patton, Astronaut Neil Armstrong, President George Washington, King Arthur. Even the movie characters were role models of strong moral fibre, even if they stepped outside the law - Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, John Wayne, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve McQueen, etc were almost always playing 'good guys' who were fighting against evil forces and winning through in spite of all obstacles and difficulties, sticking to their moral values even if it meant breaking the law.

Look at todays youth. Who do they admire and aspire to be like. "Musicians" and celebrities manufactured via standard industry practises with little regard for their suitability beyond the next quarters profits.

Look at the Doc Savage Oath  for example, to be read by enthusiastic children every night before bed (a perfect NLP technique for programming your brain):

  • Let me strive every moment of my life to make myself better and better, to the best of my ability, that all may profit by it.
  • Let me think of the right and lend all my assistance to those who need it, with no regard for anything but justice.
  • Let me take what comes with a smile, without loss of courage. Let me be considerate of my country, of my fellow citizens and my associates in everything I say and do.
  • Let me do right to all, and wrong no man.

How much better is that than todays repetitive messages programmed in by industries that Ho's, pimping and shootings are the cool things to aspire to?

Even when I was growing up Hulk Hogan was telling kids to "Train, say your prayers, take your vitamins. Be true to yourself. Be true to your country."

Hulk Hogan influenced me as a wrestler. When I was the wrestling champion in Australia after the matches I would stick around and sign photos and do autographs of my wrestling persona. I'd take the time to tell the kids to eat their vegetables and exercise. Today I write this blog. I would like to pass on some of my values to those ready for my messages, I see it as my social responsibility, to continue the growth of society.

Role models should be people of moral fibre, achievement and a 'good' person. By emulating these role models children should better themselves and society.

I don't see how society is bettered by a generation of children listening to music that praises pimps, drug dealers, hookers and murderers.

Those not listening to this type of music are listening to canned, manufactured waffle by boy/girl bands pure existant for their bodies and looks.

Celebrity magazines are often as much to blame with bad news about famous people as their bread and butter stories.

I realise life is not all black and white contrast, there is no good vs evil, everything is a blend with my personal good values being someone elses bad morals but there is a general direction that would benefit individuals and society - like Doc Savages Oath.

That is what is wrong with todays youth generation.
