The benefits of not watching TV? What benefits? How about this one for a start
What would you do if your boss gave you 4
1/2 hours a day off work each day - Same pay. What would you do
with all your free time?
Maybe go to the beach, park or lake? Workout or get back into
sports? Hit a round of golf? Play tennis? Visit friends and
socialise more often? Learn a new language?
Well if you are an average TV viewer, turning off your TV will
give you the same freedom.
For 8 years now I have said No to TV. I chose to do this. Now you
begin to understand why...
In Australia we call the TV the Idiot Box
because like an idiot it never shuts up, and secondly only talks
rubbish. Too bad todays generation were raised by the 'tube and
don't carry the same sensibilities as the older generation.
According to Nielsen Media, a very trustworthy source, the
average American watches 4hrs 32minutes a day, seven days a week.
That is 31hrs 44min each week watching the idiot box, you only go
to work 36-40 hours a week.
Keeping that in mind, do you reckon that there might be some huge benefits in not watching TV?
Let's see you could watch TV or you could;
* Start a part time business (almost full time)
* Take a second job, and pay that mortgage off
* Take a course in Real Estate or Stocks - learn how to attain
financial freedom
* Play your favourite sports
* Get in shape, feel better about yourself
* Become active, meet people, get a new girlfriend, make new
friends, spend time with your kids
* LIVE YOUR LIFE rather than watch someone elses make believe life, I mean isn't having sex better than watching someone on TV pretend?
Isn't it time you grew out of having imaginary friends who play
make believe all the time?
To watch your imaginary friends sitting around an imaginary coffee shop acting out imaginary dramas in a television studio for pay. What do you care what happens in their imaginary lives - shouldn't you be more involved in living your own life?
I gave my TV away 8 years ago, I have No TV. The reason was not for time but to
take control of my life.
Put it this way, you become like the people you associate with. If
your child hangs out with pot smoking drop outs, what do you thiink
your kid will end up doing? If your friends are all avid stock
market investors there is a good chance that over time you will
become interested in stock and bonds, like them.
Imagine the difference between having a close group of friends who
are all Harvard Business Graduates eager for management positions,
or if your close friends were crack smoking homeless people.
The people you associate with do have an influence on your life.
Now if your "Friends" are a bunch of low self confidence buffoons
that sit around a coffee shop and whine all day, guess what you are
likely to become more like?
Welcome to the TV's subtle effect of subconscious programming, you can choose positive
influences in your life, and self administer these positive
influences to change your life and to live the dream you have
always wanted (like becoming an International Actor for example),
or you can turn the TV on and turn your brain off and have your
brain swamped in useless drivel that slowly changes you to match.
This is why I turned the TV off to start with.
As the The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy sang in their hit song "Television, Drug of the Free":
One nation under god has turned into
one nation under the influence of one drug
(chorus) Television, the drug of the nation
Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation
Click the linked song title above to read the rest of the lyrics, you'll probably remember the song. Too bad it was not enough to counter the mass populations addiction to TV.
Did I say addiction to TV? Yes, look about you in your life and see how many people 'need' to watch their soap operas or favourite shows. Do they get nervous when they miss them (withdrawals)? Do they run back home to get their 'fix' as soon as possible? Do they put other priorities on the back burner and put their TV addiction first? People are addicted to TV with many of the same symptoms as drug addicts. Remember there is emotional and psychological addiction, not just physical.
Next watch the News. It is all sensationalised negative stuff. Murders,
disasters, suicide plunges with amateur footage, it is all bad
news. Horror movies right there on your TV. Tell me watching that everynight is good for your outlook on life.
Not scared yet, wait there's more - Terrorists, Sharks, War in the
Middle East, disembowlings, beheadings, they've got it all for
you.
Where's the good news, where are the stories about bitter enemies
resolving their differences and how they achieved it, how the
environment is starting to benefit from public awareness, the
volunteer doctors in Asia performing small operations on facially
deformed children to make them look normal and give them a chance
at a normal life, a chance to have a girlfriend and to marry -
rather than being treated like a freak all their lives.
Where is all the good news? Not on TV.
Do yourself a favour and turn off your TV, at first it is difficult
as you are used to having it there to sedate you. The first month I
used to get really bored, so I started reading - non-fiction. As my
mind improved so did my outlook on life. I could see possibilities
opening up to me, I read books about successful people who had
"made it" and more importantly I learned how they did it. Then I
realised that I could do it too.
Now if I watch the TV I get bored, I cannot sit still long enough.
If I have to watch a movie for professional reasons (it is my work)
then I watch it while I cook dinner and then while I eat. Often it
takes me several meals to watch one movie.
Most of my friends are the same, not many of us watch TV, we get
out and do things. We enjoy our lives.
There are so many benefits to not having a TV, these above examples are compelling reasons to not watch TV in themselves.
What about you? Are you going to turn the TV off and get out and
discover YOUR life?
