Around Thailand the cheekier Thais will call me "Khun Yuk".
Small children playing will stop and stare, holding their hands over their mouth they will whisper "Yuk" to each other.
A quick sniff test of my underarms confirmed that I was not stinky, maybe they just think I am ugly - fair enough my skin is different, my face is different and I dress different - but I am not that bad am I?
One night at a restraunt with my Australian friend Michael revealed the mystery to me. The owners son was brought out and introduced a five year old boy by the name of Tiger. When tiger was introduced his eyes bulged out and he jumped behind his mothers leg, peering around one side, speaking quickly to his mum - the only word I could catch was Yuk.
Michael burst out laughing, living in Thailand as a jewelry exporter for 6 years had given him fluency in Thai.
Tiger was scared that I was a giant.
Yuk means giant, ok, so it wasn't because I was stinky or ugly - good!
Next time I heard Yuk I turned and wittily replied "I not Yuk, I yum!" then Michael explained that Yum Yum is a slang term for headjob (oral sex)
