I just got back from the casting call for a new movie. The casting for it was in fact last Thursday but I was headed to Laos for a week vacation (since cancelled).
I asked my acting agent to chase it up and get me to the casting call no matter what, surprisingly she managed to get me in on a Sunday...
GOOD!
That means they are willing to look at others, meaning that no one has walked in and fitted the role exactly. If you do a casting and pass with flying colours usually they will no say anything directly but there have now been 2 castings I have been at where they called and cancelled the rest of hte appointments while I was still there.
Todays was a little different. The movie is called "Burn" and it is to be shot and aired locally. All I know of the character I tried out for is that the character is a bad guy and tall, they did not want to see my muscle and did not want to see my acting - just some photos.
Bugger! How can I shine if I just get photos like all the other "contestants"?
"So you don't want any acting like this?" - I pulled a mean face and approached the girl like I was grabbing her hair and putting a gun to her head
She said great and took a few more photos from that position.
The only mistake I made is that I did not speak more Thai to show that I am capable.
Often it is up to the Actor to differentiate himself at the casting. The casting agent knows little about the actual role and often just goes on flimsy instructions sent by the director. If you follow these basic directions then you will end up looking like a stunned fish, like all the other non-professionals, as you make 3 moves and stare at the camera wondering what they are thinking.
Instead if you can make up your own scenario that incorporates everything they asked you to do then you will look 10 times more animated and 10 times better than the stunned fish.
I don't think I did so well at this casting, I had too little info to go on - I should have been more prepared. If I knew it was to be in Thai I would have made up a little scenario the night before. Again my fault - I should have anticipated it.
Be prepared.
Still there is a fair chance I will get the part as I think I have the look they wanted.
