Depression = Boredom

Monday, 24 March 2008

Depression, a multi-million dollar drug company 'disease'. "Here", they say, "take this little blue pill and everything will be better" - unless the little blue pill is full of MDMA (ecstasy) then I doubt it very much.

So what causes depression? Upon reading Timothy Ferris' book The Four Hour Work Week he claims that boredom is the cause of depression. Now this I can see and agree with....

But you might think that you are depressed because you have a 'broken heart', to be honest this is very unlikely the case - it s more likely that you cannot deal with rejection and you have a limited availability mindset (opposite of the popular term abundance mindset).

If your life was full of excitement and meeting new and interesting people, including potential suitors how long do you think your broken heart would last? Imagine you had accidentally befriended an up and coming Hollywood star at the local supermarket and they invited you to all the glitzy celebrity parties where you fit in and made new exciting friends who were out making life happen - how many night would you sit at home and wallow in your own sorrow?

The funny thing is that even the glitzy celebrity lifestyle can grow dull and boring.

Living in Thailand is many, many travellers dream. The number of tourists who come through Bangkok and utter the same words "Thailand is paradise" - which is why I no longer talk to or associate with tourists - and they think everything here is magic.

Let me assure you that once you live here and start to understand how things work, what goes on behind the tourist scenes, and more importantly you realise that you cannot go on spending like a 2 week tourist and expect to survive.

So for me I am getting bored in Bangkok. Why? Well everything I used to find fun is now standard, I have done it. Maybe I have done it so much that it is no longer the thrill it used to be, or I know what is really happening behind the smile and I do not like the undercurrents.

So I have many of the 'symptoms' of the depression disease. On the Prozac.com page there is a self depression test to see if you 'should' be on Prozac.

Today I scored 47, this means I am 6% off the 50 that would have my Western Docter (if he was a Tard or anxious for drug company kick-backs) prescribing me anti-depressants by the handful.

I mean F!

I am bored, I don't need drugs, give me something exciting to do or better yet let me go out and look for something exciting to do. Something that will recharge my zest for life.

I can only imagine what a person who worked in an office, the same office, day in, day out for 40 years would be feeling like. I am sure they would score well over the 50 mark and be put on an IV drip of a cocktail of drugs.

(I am sure some people are happy in their office jobs, but I doubt it is a large percentage).

To be productive I am going to the gym in the mornings, eating, resting then doing martial arts training in the afternoon for 2 hours. After the current batch of movies I plan on heading down to one of the islands in the south of Thailand (Koh Samui?) and taking a dive course and adding more skills to my resume, as well as living a beach lifestyle and relaxing for a month or so until I get my open water certification - lets see how the 1st week goes first though.

I also want to head back to Myanmar before my friend Peter leaves in July as I do not think I will be visiting him in Afganistan at all.

I also have to head to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to check out the potential for livability as it is relatively easy as a foreigner to get Permanent Residency and to own property (something that is near impossible in foreigner unfriendly Thailand) as sooner or later I am going ot have to invest my movie money and have a settled base to live. thailand is not stable enough with the likes of the last Government vowing to return Thailand to the Thais and restricting foreign ownership and state based mandatory acquisitions of businesses on the cards - makes me really want to put my money here.

Back to the point, get out and find what makes you happy, find what excites you in life, I highly recommend Tim Ferris' Book the Four Hour Work week to anyone looking at adding something extra to their life. Regardless of wether you implement any of his strategies there are lots of ideas to get you thinking in the book - like his idea of "mini-retirements".

You will find your depression will go rather quickly once you start to enjoy yourself and enjoy your life, once the boredom goes you will find that youthful exuberance again.
