A rookie wrestler needs three things Training, Personality and a Costume.
Here are the basic essentials for what you need when designing your new wrestling costume...
When deciding upon a wrestling costume there are several decisions you need to make
- Choose a wrestling costume to suit your persona, this seems simple but don't make the mistake of choosing something outrageous if your personality does not back it up. One guy we used to wrestle with was a hopeless talker for instance so his costume had the mouth sewn shut and he would just make muffled yells instead - great way to hide his weakness
- If you have a regular wrestling tag team partner get matching colours - it helps the crowd, some of whom don't really watch, recognise who is on which side at a glance, it also helps in the confusion of combat to recognise who's arm you are twisting
- No sharp objects, includes rings and belt buckles they will catch and they will scratch and draw blood, worse yet they can tear a wrestling costume and leave your ass hanging out with another 7 minutes of match time to go
- Remove piercings if you don't want them ripped out - some wrestlers like to wear piercings as their persona, just beware that no matter how 'careful' you are they will get ripped out at some point
- Strong material that can stretch - stretching is better than ripping, the flexibility is also needed so that you can move freely without your wrestling costume impeding your movement
- Double stitching in everything - so it doesn't rip the first time someone grabs you by the costume and lifts you off the ground
- High Boots with ankle support are very important, sprained, broken and shattered ankles are a common wrestling injury, best to prevent as much as possibel
- Knee pads are essential, elbow pads not so much. You will be landing on your knees a lot, be kind to them now or when you are 45 you'll be walking with a frame
- Don't dress like you walked off the street – get a wrestling costume and look like a wrestler, it's professional. Be unique.
- Hand Washable – leathers are a no go. Try wrestling 2 weeks straight in something you cannot wash. You'll be kicked off the card within the first 4 days
These are your basic needs regarding a wrestling costume. Have fun.
