Alright Saturday night - night when people with real jobs go out and get drunk!
What is Conan doing? What is there to do in Bangkok on a Saturday night - actually that has to be one of the dumbest questions of all time - you can do ANYTHING....
Here's a list of things to do on a Saturday night, well actually you do do these any night, Bangkok is a non-stop happening place without draconian alcohol laws (well they do have some silly ones instead):
- Ratchada - many Thai nightclubs frequented by college and university students
- Soi Cowboy/Nana/Pat Pong - go go bars for tourists to entertain themselves, or rather for them to be entertained by go go girls.... or go go ladyboys... if they are not careful
- Thonglor/Ekamai - Higher class Thai nightclubs of which I have only been to very few
- Sukhumvit - EVERYTHING you might need on a night out (did I mention this is where I live?) Q-bar, Twisted Republic, Bed Bar (all soi 11), Coboy/Nana (soi 4 - see above), many, many fine dining establishments, Gullivers pool on soi 5, Bier Garten bar on soi 7, Soi 7/1 about 15 bars including the French owned Eden club
- Washington Square and Queens Park Garden - lower budget versions of Cowboy/Nana but without the dancing, but with plenty of alcohol.
- Food Stalls - everywhere, open all night along all major roads, often serving beer/whiskey early into the morning hours
- R.C.A. - no idea what it stands for but the place where hip Thais go, about 15 very nice night clubs, maybe more, all packed with Thais and travellers
- Many assorted bars littered all over Bangkok
- Soapies - naughty massage on petchaburi rd, Ratchada and a few other places
- Thai Massage - pretty much everywhere
- Cinemas - all the latest movis in very comfortable surrounds for about $3 per person
- Karaoke - naughty and nice - an interesting experience one time I went to a Thai karaoke joint with some English lads, they paid the DJ to play our requests (also we were 1st there) and he played Western music until the Thais were bored stupid then one English lad gets up with his Thai girlfriend and sings a love duet in Thai! The locals go wild, girls run up giving us their phone numbers, the place is out of control and we are accepted, local whiskey is poured down our throats and a good night is had by all (we were the only white faces there)
- 7/11 - the legendary 7/11 whiskey circle is always an optionC
- Catch a flight - early enough in the evening get a flight to Cambodia for an even more debauched night out (or is that only me?)
- Taxi to Pattaya - sin city, that sh*t hole or sometimes (desperate tourists) fun city, madness like you've never witnessed before, witness the Walking Street live and free passing Circus, pretty much open all night
- After Hours Clubs - Spice, Spicy, Boss, Tunnel and many more - catering for a range of all tastes.
- Call a friend - Thais are notorious for being awake at all hours (turn your phone off at night if you want 8 hours sleep)
- Visit China Town, Little Arabia or Little India - minority migrant quarters for a dash of International atmosphere and food
- Khao San Rd - backpacker central, I hate backpackers (they think they are 'too cool' and are generally unwashed - not my liking)
- Ask your hotel/hostel staff for suggestions
- Jump in a taxi with some Thai people and go with them - 80% they will be confused but welcoming, but it guarantees you'll have a different night (though you will be expected to pay)
- 997 other clubs and bars
- Probably a few opium dens around - no idea about these though they are easy to find in Northern Laos
- Illegal Gambling dens - quite a few around, invite only
- Suam Nam Night Bazzar - if it is still open - imported European beers for guys and shopping! for chicks. ie You sit with mates and drink and send the womenfolk to look at shiny shoes.
- Pretty much anything else you wnat depending upon your command of the Thai language and connections :)
So what am I doing on a Saturday night?
Well writting this article for a start because I have been slack recently, but to aleviate my burden I did go to the 7/11 and even though I don't have enough participants for the Whiskey Circle I did grab dinner... and what was that I hear you ask...
US$5 For Dinner
Pretty good deal, 2 chicken breast (real chicken breast) burgers and 3 large locally produced natural beers (no artificial crap) for $5, pretty good deal, until the realise the minimum wage here is $200 a month, or for a foreigner the minimum you'll earn is a part time English Teacher job at $500 a month, just enough to survice upon as a Westerner (visa fees, more food as we are bigger, room for yourself, the basics).
And then?
Well it is now 8.30pm, I think I'll shower head downstairs, avoid the ladyboy bar, and grab another beer from the 7/11 and then grab some boiled pork and rice from the push cart set up just downstairs everynight, or maybe the steamed chicken breast and rice ($1.20 each).
Then? Well let's see how that goes first, likely I will see someone from the building and we'll formulate a plan from there, failing that I might head up to the complex of bars the whole 100 meters up the street and see if a guy I know from Australia still drinks there, if not???? Have a few random drinks, chat to random people (met an ex-US ambassador there before) then maybe head to Q-bar or Twisted Republic... if I make it that far - there are many distractions in that 1km journey.....
Love living in Asia :D
