Yesteday I was called in for a Japanese Television Commercial (TVC) audition. I am not sure what the product was but I have to say I am very much not liking to go and hang out with models and amateurs at these castings.
So many fake people, so many people lying about thier experience, so many people with NO experience, so many of them dressed and acting like they are some sort of superstar with attitudes that I could smack....
... .bloody models are so annoying... and vacuous. Maybe I am getting cynical as I get older.... naaa!
Anyway the casting called for a boxer and his trainer the casting agent came out and asked everyone specifically if he was a boxer, the ones who hesitated they pushed into the casting as the guy riding a pushbike, then proceeded to take them outside to check if they could ride a pushbike.
I answered that I was the Pro-Wrestling Ex-Champion of Australia that was good enough for them.
So I went in with Mike, another experienced actor who just finished filming on Bangkok Adrenaline with us, and we took turns at being the boxer and the trainer.
Now even though my father was a very good amateur boxer, I personally have never had a lesson at all.
I did not let this deter me though. This is a TVC not a championship fight, we are supposed to be actors not fighters so I pulled my skills out of my butt and acted my way through it - getting good laughs from everyone in the process.
First I was the trainer and Mike boxed - I talked and carried on like the trainers I had seen on TV before the big matches in Australia, I thought it was pretty good impromptu acting. Then I had a go at being the boxer and Mike had the pads on his hands.
So punching into the pads Mike was directing me with his speach, uppercut, quick jabs, look out - duck and swung a big roundhouse at me. Instead of ducking I put up a Karate block and swung a great roundhouse straight at his jaw - yelling "Waddaya mean duck? I'll take his hit and knock 'im out"
Great character acting, but I was called to finish very quickly so maybe they think that I am not what they were after - but then it is not the casting houses call - it is the director who will watch the playbacks later.
Also it is a Japanese TVC casting, the Japanese have a well known sense of weirdness, just Google "Japanese Game Shows" to see some whacky stuff.
This would not be the first time I was told I am not what they are looking for but then got the part anyway.
I mean if someone likes me they rewrite the script a little, it's not like they cast for 7' muscle giants usually.
So now I wait to see if I get a call back for the part.
Lastly guess when the TVC is supposed to shoot somewhere between the 1st and 5th of May. I am already working 3 of those days.... again jobs pile up one on top of the other then a drought for months...
AND the camera man wanted photos with me again, if I am such a star give me the $&#*% job!
