Tom Yum Goong (Warrior King for UK release, The Protector for US Release, Honour of the Dragon for European release) is the most successful Thai film ever in terms of cash inflow of $25,715,096 USD.
So if it was so successful where is Tom Yung Goong 2 (or Warrior King 2 or The Protector 2 or Honour of the Dragon 2)?
That my friend is where the new Movie Som Tam (pronounced Som Tum) comes in. Following the naming convention of Tom Yum Goong (a spicy prawn soup), next in the 'series' we have Som Tam (a spicy papaya salad).....
Following the success of Tom Yum Goong (Warrior King / The Protector/ Honour of the Dragon) Baa Ram Ewe - the Thai movie production company - has planned a series of spin offs, or Part 2, Part 3, etc.
The difference is that it won't be a part 2 as such with a continuing storyline but it will be a part 2 with the main actors from Tom Yum Goong (Warrior King / The Protector / Honour of the Dragon) each making a movie "of his own" as it was explained to me by Jon Foo (Jon is the fighter with the swords in the burning temple scene)
Each of the main actors would get to star in his own movie. Som Tam is the first of these releases to be started now with Nathan Jones, the huge guy who fights Tony Jaa towards the end of the movie.
Interesting side note Tony Jaa is an Anglisised name for
Panom Yeerum (real name) and he is commonly known in Thailand as Jaa Panom.
I am not sure of the details as to which of the other actors have been offered their own films at this stage and how far along in planning these movies are. All I know is that I am to start filming in Som Tam (Som Tum) next friday.
I know that Johnny Nguyen (wu-shu fighter in the white suit) who played a very prominent part is now in Vietnam producing The Rebel, when I met Jonny he was working on the Powerkids movie with me - at that time he had just started to make this movie based on the Vietnamese uprising against the French (that would later turn into the Vietnam war).
Jonny wrote the script and was producing and starring in it himself. The movie is now in post production and I can only say congratulations - another self made man, expect to see more of him in future.
Tony Jaa is working on his next movie that he is Directing and Starring in too, though it is not with Baa Ram Ewe but with the parent company Sahamongkol Film I have no further details of this.
Check back often for updates as next week I start shooting Som Tam (Som Tum) - also known unofficially as Tom Yum Goong (Warrior King / The Protector/ Honour of the Dragon) Part 2
